What can I expect?
Step inside a rural Irish pub on a windswept evening and prepare to be captivated by The Weir – a spellbinding tale of ghostly secrets, human longing, and the timeless power of storytelling.
Bringing this haunting classic back to the West End is none other than Olivier Award-winning playwright and director Conor McPherson, with Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin, Harry Potter) making his long-awaited West End debut in the role of Jack. The production runs for a strictly limited season at the intimate Harold Pinter Theatre – and promises to be one of London’s must-see theatre events of 2025.
Set in a small, weather-beaten pub on the west coast of Ireland, The Weir begins with four locals enjoying drinks and banter. When a mysterious woman arrives from Dublin, the group attempts to impress her with ghostly tales and rural legends – each story darker and more revealing than the last. But it's her story, quiet and true, that changes everything.
First performed in 1997 to critical acclaim, The Weir went on to win the Evening Standard Award, Critics’ Circle Award, and the coveted Olivier Award for Best New Play. McPherson’s ability to mix natural humour with supernatural tension has earned him a place among the most significant playwrights of his generation.
The Weir is a heartfelt exploration of loneliness, community, and how storytelling can bind us together. With Brendan Gleeson leading a world-class cast in one of Ireland’s most evocative plays, this is an extraordinary chance to witness a modern classic – performed by one of the greatest actors of our time.
